China has achieved a new world record in its development of a “man-made sun”, a fusion energy reactor. Scientists managed to sustain the reactor, at the extreme temperature of 70 million degrees Celsius for 1,056 seconds. In May, scientists also made a breakthrough, when they were able to achieve a plasma temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds. China’s development of an “artificial” sun is part of its mission to find solutions to create limitless clean energy.

A rare hybrid solar eclipse drew crowds of amateur and professional astronomers to a beachside town in Australia on April 20, 2023. The eclipse was both a total solar eclipse, in which the moon blots out the sun, as well as an annular one where only the centre is obscured. However, the total solar eclipse was only visible in Australia, East Timor and Indonesia. The rare event only occurs about once a decade, with the next expected in 2031.

China’s swim star Sun Yang to miss Tokyo Olympics despite doping-ban reduction

China’s swimming superstar, Sun Yang, will still miss the Tokyo Olympic Games in July and August, 2021, despite a shortened doping ban. Sun was banned from the sport after an incident in 2018 where he and members of his entourage were found to have deliberately broken vials of Sun’s blood samples taken by doping inspectors at an off-season test. The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s original verdict in 2019 was an 8-year ban, but that was reduced on appeal to 4 years and 3 months on June 22, 2021. Sun will only be eligible to race again in 2024 - the year of the Paris Olympics - when he will be 32 years old.

The US has condemned what it said were “dangerous maneuvers” carried out by the Chinese Coast Guard that led to a collision with a Philippines Coast Guard (PCG) vessel in the South China Sea on Tuesday, March 5.

At least four personnel were injured, he said, releasing footage of water cannons being deployed, and the moment two ships briefly collided.
